“Decolonizing Puerto Rico, Caribbean Spiritualism, and the Tarot”

A couple weeks back I was interviewed by the Greg Carlwood of The Higherside Chats. This has been an enlightening and freeing experience for me as I had never been interviewed before. We chatted about spiritism, Puerto Rico, and a little about the cards. If you’ve ever wondered what kind of magical doings I get up to, especially here in Puerto Rico, and also about me and where I come from, give the interview a listen. Greg is an excellent host. An additional note: Greg mentioned videos from someone that I had recommended he watch for context, it is the youtube video channel of Sancista Brujo Luis. He is an excellent resource on all things Folk Caribbean Spiritism. I highly recommend his channel, which can be found here.

Also, if you prefer the youtube version of the podcast, here is the link: THC.

  1. One interesting part for me was your description of the spiritual landscape in Puerto Rico. In PR, spiritualism seems to be a part of everyday life. Whereas, in the States, religion may only become a weekly activity while people are immersed in entertainment most of the time. Many sore necks while staring at smartphone apps. People may also strap them to their heads—a natural transition.

      1. you did great. being interviewed is so nerve-racking.
and i’m with you – THE LAND! being in relationship with it, and figuring out how to be a steward of it, is paramount. i think you make an excellent point about it being especially for crucial for Puerto Ricans’ sense of “belonging” and place. (i also had no idea that most of your food is shipped in. that’s insane. growing food IS sovereignty.)
you’re asking some really important questions. keep going ❤

      2. Aw thank you yes, indeed. I feel that there is so more to be plumbed and unpacked consciously with regards to our colonized selves, bodies, and the land. This is something I’ve been sitting with since moving back and seeing ways through, or following lines of exploration vis a vis soveriegnty vs colonozation and the effects of it in all realms of our daily living and being. For me it’s important making contact with non livong spirits and with the dead of the land, both rebuilding bridges and healing.
